posted July 31, 2002 10:39On the injection pump side of the tractor, on the clutch housing is a little window covered by a plate and held in place by a single stud. Remove this and you will see the fly wheel edge. Turn the engine and the timing marks on the flywheel will appear. Check in the manual on this site to find the correct one for your tractor.
Just in front of the injection pump is a plate held in place by two studs. Remove this plate and you will see the injection pump drive gear. On the pump housing is a lug with a line on it. This should line up with a line on the pump drive gear. If you cannot see a line on the pump drive gear, turn the engine one complete turn until the fly wheel marks come back into line and check again.
If the marks at the pump end do not line up, remove the front cover, slacken the gear retaining studs, move the pump drive until the marks line up and retighten the retaining studs.
The gearbox problem sounds like worn bearings and gears at the worst or worn or broken interlock springs/balls at the best.
